Tutorial 6 of 7

Graph paper, posters and booklets

Intermediate 8 min

Print exact graph, dot, isometric, hex, music and lined paper, tile a photo into a big poster and fold a stapled booklet.

Three printables in Printshop work with whole pages: ruled paper, posters made of many sheets, and booklets that you fold and staple.

Graph, dot, isometric, hex, music and lined paper

  1. Click Paper on the left (or press 6), or open the template Dot grid paper.
  2. Choose the Ruling: Square grid, Dot grid, Isometric triangles, Hexagons, Music staves or Lined paper.
  3. Set the spacing in millimetres. For grids, Major line every … cells draws a stronger line, for example every 5 cells. Music paper has Staves per page; lined paper a Margin line.

Under Lines set Line width (mm), the colours and the page Margin (mm). Name and date line at the top and 10 cm scale bar in the bottom margin are optional; the scale bar lets you check that the printer did not scale the page. Pages prints up to 50 pages in one PDF.

The grid is centred in the printable area, so the margins are equal on both sides.

A poster from ordinary sheets

  1. Click Poster (or press 7) and press Choose image…. JPEG and PNG work best; other formats are converted.
  2. Set the Poster width (mm). The height follows the image.
  3. Sheet orientation → Fewest sheets tries portrait and landscape and takes the one that needs fewer sheets.
  4. Printer margin (mm) is the border your printer cannot print; Overlap (mm) is the strip that is glued under the neighbouring sheet.

The info lines show the poster size, the number of sheets and the Effective resolution in pixels per inch. Below 100 ppi, Printshop warns that the print looks soft up close — fine for a poster seen from a few metres.

The PDF starts with a cover page: an assembly map with the tile names (A1, A2 … B1 …) and a test square. Each tile has crop marks and its name in the margin. Trim each sheet along the dashed line at its left and top edge and glue it over its neighbour so that the crosses meet.

A booklet to fold and staple

  1. Click Booklet (or press 8), or open the template Pocket notebook.
  2. Under Booklet pages choose Notebook pages (the ruling from Paper), Calendar months (the settings from Calendar) or My images, one per page.
  3. Under Folding, choose the Binding edge, Page numbers and Fold marks.

Printshop puts the pages in saddle-stitch order: the outer sheet carries the first and last pages. If the page count is not a multiple of four, blank pages are added at the end. Creep compensation (mm per sheet) shifts inner pages slightly towards the spine, so the outer edges line up after folding — about the paper thickness, 0.1 mm for office paper.

Print the PDF double-sided and flip on the short edge. Stack the sheets in order, fold them in the middle and staple along the fold.
